Composed for brass quintet: Emily Denison, Philippe Battikha, Craig Pedersen, trumpets; Simon Jolicoeur-Côté, Scott Thomson, trombones. Performed on 26 July, 2018, outside the Darling Foundry, 745 rue Ottawa, Griffintown, Montreal.
Ottawall Odwalla is a spatialized piece for mobile quintet, a brass fantasy in anticipation of the 50th Anniversary of the Art Ensemble of Chicago in 2019, using the group’s theme song, “Odwalla,” composed by Roscoe Mitchell, as source material from which various solo and group improvisations unfolded.
The piece is dedicated to Lester Bowie.
